To us, sustainability is just as important as style. We’re constantly thinking about ways to leave a lighter footprint, whether that’s what goes into our shoes, how we design our packaging, or what happens to your Rothy’s once they’re worn and loved. That’s where you come in.

We’re excited to announce Rothy’s Recycling, a new program that lets you send in your well-loved Rothy’s for free and turns them into yoga mats, outsoles, and other environmentally-friendly products. (They may even become insoles in a new pair of Rothy’s.)

Shipping them back is free. Just fill out your info with our partner, put your Rothy’s back in their resealable box, drop them in the mail, and they’re on their way to a new life you can feel good about.

Recycling Rothy’s is personal to us. Of the roughly 12 billion shoes produced each year, a UK study estimates 85% wind up in landfills. Not only is this a problem due to limited landfill space, it also causes other serious environmental damage: Landfills often leach toxins into groundwater and rivers.

Then, there’s the economic impact. According to International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, for every 10,000 tons of waste sent to landfills, 1 job is created. That same amount of waste can create 10 recycling jobs or 75 materials reuse jobs.

Despite these stats, Americans have doubled the amount of clothing they trash annually over the past 20 years, from 7 million to 14 million tons or an average of 80 pounds per person. The EPA estimates diverting all of those often-toxic textiles into a recycling program would be the environmental equivalent of taking 7.3 million cars off the road. That’s a huge footprint.

This Earth Day (and every day), help us do our part in making the world a cleaner, beautiful, more sustainable place. We’ll do it together in style.
