Meet The Mary Jane.

Behind the design: Meet The Mary Jane.

We’ve stepped into a brand new style—and we can’t wait for you to meet these shoes. The Mary Jane is off-duty ballerina with a touch of whimsy, adding a little bit of special to any occasion.

From that first spark of inspiration to the very last detail, a whole lot goes into the making of each of our shoes. We sat down with some of the product team to learn about how they dreamed up the perfect springtime style.

Senior Design Manager Lavion, Senior Director of Merchandising Lesley, and Technical Designer Kristin shown in our design studio.
What was the inspiration behind this collection?

“We were drawn to the feminine and playful spirit of The Mary Jane, and felt that this collection would build beautifully off our existing assortment of shoes. From a trend standpoint, it seemed very timely to tap into this classic style and reinterpret it in a way that works for the girl on the go.” - Lesley, Senior Director of Merchandising.

How did you approach putting your own spin on the classic Mary Jane? What are some of  the features you love?

“In taking on this new silhouette, we really wanted to reimagine The Mary Jane from a point of view that was distinctly Rothy’s. We experimented with shape and proportion, developing a rounded vamp that adds a little bit of softness to an otherwise sharp style. We also played a lot with the straps—making them adjustable and allowing the wearer to style them however they like. I also love how we elevated our use of color, coming up with complementary color pairings that worked beautifully together.” - Lavion, Senior Design Manager.

What inspired the color palette for this collection?

“For this collection, we wanted to develop a range of color that felt fresh, feminine and versatile. We went for sophisticated classics like Black and Sapphire, while also developing soft, blush tones that pair perfectly with any outfit. For a dash of bold, we added the striking Cinnamon and Wildcat. ” - Kristin, Technical Designer.

If you had to pick a personal favorite, which Mary Jane would you choose?

“I would choose The Mary Jane in Sapphire! I love the contrast of the beautiful neutral ties against the deep blue hue. It’s like having two shoes in one.” - Lesley.

“I love both solid and prints, so I can’t pick just one! The Mary Jane in Cinnamon has beautiful rich tones and I love the pop of color in its bright red bow. I also think The Mary Jane in Wildcat is a style staple for any wardrobe—and is perfect to dress up or down. - Kristin.

“If the shoes were made in my size, I would definitely go for the Wildcat to add a little bit of jungle to any outfit! I also love the soft, rosy hues that we created in Rosebud.” - Lavion.
